S23 is a non-steroidal Selective Androgen Receptor Modulator (SARM) from GTx Inc. SARMs are a new class of drugs that act like testosterone targeting certain receptors in the body located in muscle and bone tissues. Studies suggest these drugs can be effective for treating issues like muscle wasting and osteoporosis. However, the clinical research on these drugs is very lacking. S23 is a modified version of another SARM molecule known as C6. Just like other SARMs, the drug is not very well-studied. Still, there is a lot of promising data coming from animal studies. S23 is currently under investigation as a potential male contraceptive. According to the available studies, this SARM induced infertility in all the rats it was administered to. The effect was dose-dependent and temporary, meaning the mice regained their fertility immediately after the treatment was stopped. This makes S23 a potential oral male contraceptive. According to the research, the drug suppresses serum concentration of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone to produce biphasic effects on spermatogenesis. Additional clinical trials are still necessary to determine how effective and safe S23 is as a contraceptive. The above study also produced other desirable effects. For instance, scientists observed a stronger affinity to androgen receptors as compared to other SARMs like Andarine. It also has an ideal anabolic-androgenic ratio allowing it to produce a good number of positive effects without any severe complications. One of those effects was increasing bone mineral density and lean muscle mass. Therefore, while S23 may be effective as a male birth control pill, it can also be used for other purposes, especially among patients with chronic conditions that lead to muscle wasting.
